The Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum, established in 1973 and located at 220 N Market St., is known as the “Little Museum in the Friendly City by the Sea.”
Visitors are invited to view the “History of Port Hueneme” film and either tour with a docent or just browse the storyboards lining the walls.
Artifacts on display include: Chumash grinding implements, the 1880 saddle of Thomas R. Bard, the 1888 Hueneme Herald Printing Press, a prized Barbed Wire Collection, an 1893 Armstrong Cabinet Grand Piano, an 1895 Diebold Safe, Berylwood Mansion furniture, a stereoscope, rare trade tokens, antique farm implements, a 3044-piece salt and pepper shaker collection, a piece of the St. Francis Dam, vintage citrus labels, WWII ration books, a 1945 barber chair, and 1950 contact lenses.
Don’t miss our Veterans Wall (in the vault) and take time to stroll the grounds to see the USS Norton Sound Memorial, the second oldest Monterey Cypress plaque, pioneer tram wheels, the monarch butterfly refuge, and the Carmen Nichols Community Garden.
Most weekends feature our Saturday Distinguished Speaker Series and Sunday Craft Workshops.
The Museum building itself is a Ventura County Landmark. The 1925 structure served as home to the Bank of Hueneme and was designed by Myron Hunt, the architect of Berylwood (the Bard Mansion at Naval Base Ventura County).
