This award was inspired by what long-time residents called the “Hueneme Spirit.” If you lived in Hueneme during the early part of the last century, you saw it in the Victorian-gowned ladies of the Women’s Improvement Club chasing down stray horses, in the crusty old bachelor who took care of a bed-bound neighbor who had nobody else, and the “friend-in-need” cooperation between two otherwise highly competitive grocery store owners. You will also see it in the life of Dennis Carpenter.
